About Amy Berrafato, LMFT, PLLC

Two trees shaped like brains

My Approach

I believe in taking a holistic approach to therapy, treating the whole person and not just their symptoms. I am a systemic thinker, always keeping relationships in mind, and I work collaboratively with clients to help them achieve their goals. I provide a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore their thoughts and feelings without judgment.

My Experience

I have 18 years of clinical experience helping individuals, couples, and families overcome a wide range of mental health issues. I specialize in anxiety, depression, grief/loss, trauma, and a variety of relationship issues. While I tailor sessions to your unique needs, I often pull from emotion focused therapy (EFT), attachment theory, mindfulness research, the Gottman method, and family systems theory.

More About Amy

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Spanish from Saint Louis University and my Master’s degree in Marital and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego. My early training included clinical work at the Department of Veterans Affairs in San Diego, with a focus on individual and couples therapy with military veterans and their families, followed by further experience working within mental health organizations providing a wide range of clinical services to adolescents, families, and adults of all ages. In addition to previous clinical work as Senior Associate and Supervisor at Spark Chicago Therapy, I also served as Adjunct Professor in the Couple and Family Therapy program at Adler University. I am fluent in Spanish, and have extensive experience treating clients of various cultural backgrounds, including interfaith, interracial, and bicultural folks, and I am a strong LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC ally. I am a Clinical Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and a professional member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). I have completed Level 2 Gottman training, and continue to expand my clinical range through ongoing commitment to personal and professional growth.
